Anyone that has been on the internet for any amount of time during the 90’s and early aughts remembers their old AOL and EarthLink email addresses. Some of us would even like to pretend that our earlier years of the internet were just a distant memory.
Well, it seems that email as a tool is currently evolving a very different definition and connotation.
Email Has Evolved into Instant Messaging
According to The Verge; many young people are currently shunning this monumental medium. Emails are being treated like spam as default. People are very hesitant to answer any emails that they receive. It said that Millennials leave thousands of inbox emails unanswered and unacknowledged each year.
Why may you ask? People now prefer platforms that lend themselves to instantaneous sharing. There are plenty of other messaging services that are way more enticing and offer way more instant communication options than that of email. Platforms like Slack, Facebook Messenger, and Twitter have been dwarfing email because users can more easily exchange information, as well as funny pictures, memes, and gifs.
Researchers are finding that people prefer more dynamic mediums like this for the day to day communication with people. The only time that most younger people are even touching email is for more formal and mundane tasks like work emails, banking statements, and insurance policies.
What Can be Done to Change Email’s Trajectory
What can be done to deter email’s downward trajectory? Not much! If you cannot beat them, you must join them! Many will argue that email services will just need to become more like modern messaging and offer more engaging ways to reach people and send out information. Others may argue that we may just need to give things a little bit of time and wait for the momentum to switch back to email.
